Sync.com is a cloud storage service that aims to make your online life truly secure. They are based out of Canada and launched in 2011, but the service has only been publicly available since 2013. The service recently surpassed 100,000 users.
Features
- Real Privacy
Sync.com offers Zero-knowledge, end-to-end encryption. Zero Knowledge basically means the company has no way to view the contents of your files. All your files get encrypted and only you have acces to the keys. Because of this storing sensitive data is not a problem. This service could be especially usefull for lawyers and doctors because it complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
- Unlimited file size
Sync.com has stated that they do not put any restrictions on file size: Source
- Extensive Backup features
They offer a “Vault” backup feature. It is a seperate location inside the platform where you can upload your archives and backup your files. This Vault will not be synchronized with your devices.
- Data Stored in multiple data centers
Your data will be stored in multiple data centers in Canada, and on multiple drives within each datacenter.
- Secure sharing capabilities
The company lets you share all your files with many extra options, such as expiry dates and read-write only.
Cheaper than dropbox and others?
You’d think the added privacy would come at an added cost. However Sync.com actually has good pricing compared to some of the bigger Cloud Storage providers out there like Dropbox or Google Drive.
Size | 5GB | 500GB | 2TB | 5TB |
Price per Year | Free | $49 | $98 | $490 |
Price per Month | Free | $4.08 | $8,16 | $40,83 |
It is weird for them to ask a lot more for the 5TB plan, the $98 might be a temporary promotion. I will contact them to get more information on this. The only downside to their payment system is that you have to pay on a yearly basis. So if you consider them, you are definitely advised to try out the 5GB free version first.
Conclusion
Before discovering Sync.com I had been using a combination of Dropbox and Boxcryptor to secure my data. However, having an integrated solution feels a lot nicer. With Dropbox and Boxcryptor you had to install a plugin to be able to acces the files on the web (unhandy when you need to get files on a PC that isn’t yours), and the combined price is higher than Sync.com.
They seem to provide all features that regular cloud storage companies have, and a broad range of usefull extra features. What this company is doing looks very promising. The only thing you might be missing is widespread integration with 3rd-party services. But if you want to have your data secured, that can be a good thing as well.
